Alex Limon

One of our newer members, Alex Limon, will be holding a teen empowerment workshop on November 7, 2009 for 75 foster teens.  She is inviting all WIB members to attend the graduation which will be held from 5:00-6:30pm.  Witness the transformation for yourself.  The workshop will be held at the Christian Church of Lemon Grove, 6970 San Miguel Ave., Lemon Grove, CA 91945.

This is quite an accomplishment for Alex as she has been trying to get these emotional literacy workshops to foster teens for a year.  Her intention is to include military and homeless teens soon.  If you want more information on Motivating the Teen Spirit you can log on and watch the 13 minute video at www.motivatingtheteenspirit.com.  Any questions call her at (858) 583-2849.

Pauline Getz

As of July 1, the new President of the Rotary Club of Poway is the former Chairman of the Poway Chamber of Commerce, Pauline Getz.  As she finished with one role, she agreed to another, which is in keeping with her commitment to the community.  Pauline’s main goal during her term will be introducing the community and potential members to the many ways Rotarians serve locally and internationally. The Rotary Club of Poway takes the organization’s motto, “Service Above Self,” very seriously—which is evident from the moment you walk in the room—but don’t take themselves too seriously.  “This  is very satisfying service,” Pauline said, “And humor is a critical feature of how we get things done.”  Pauline continues to run her business, Getz & Associates, which focuses on corporate law, and balances work, community and church involvement.

Academy of Finance Mentoring program 2009/10

Dear Potential Mentor,

Two years ago, the Academy of Finance, a small learning community at the San Diego High, School of Business was awarded a grant from the California Partnership Academies.  One of the requirements of funding is maintaining a mentoring program for the juniors in the program.  We have just completed our very successful pilot year and we are looking for new mentors that would like to get involved in our program.

The following information is provided to inform you of the program requirements (see Mentor Guidelines for specifics):

  • Participate in mentor/mentee meetings at San Diego High School

    • Meetings held on the 3rd Tuesday of the month (4:30-5:30 p.m.)

  • Regular contact with your student (phone or email).

  • Create opportunities (outside of school meetings) to enrich your student’s education.

  • Whenever possible, attend various Academy of Finance events:

(i.e. Academy functions, social activities, presentations/ceremonies)

As you know, our students are in need of as many positive role models as they can have.  Watching a child develop his/her skills and potential is a very rewarding experience and we would welcome your participation in our mentoring program.  If you know of others in your professional circles who would be willing to be a mentor, please pass along this information; I will be happy to contact them with specific details.

Please let me know if I can answer any questions.  Click on… www.tinyurl.com/aofmentorprofile  to secure your spot as a mentor.

Sincerely,

Jeremy Martin

"Hello Ladies, I just wanted to thank you all for your advice and support...I'm going to Japan!  For those of you who were unable to make our First Friday Luncheon, our topic was "something most people don't know about you".  At the time, I had recently been nominated to interview for an exchange program in Japan for my company, Union Bank of California.  I interviewed last Monday and was just notified that I am one of four candidates selected from all over California to participate in this program.  I will be leaving the end of January and returning in three months.  All of your support has been invaluable and again, Thank You!"

Nathalie Gill

Update: Nathalie sent an email letting everyone know that she is enjoying Japan and she will hopefully see everyone in May or June. You can read about Nathalie's trip at: http://nathalieinjapan.blogspot.com/

Bonnie Schwartz elected President of

Rotary Club 33 of San Diego.

Bonnie will assume the Presidency in 2010-2011 and is now president elect-elect. She is the 5th woman to be elected to this post by Club 33 since being founded in 1911. Women came into Rotary in 1987 and have continued to increase their numbers and impact worldwide. Club 33 is the 33rd club formed since 1905 when Rotary was founded in Chicago by a gentleman named Paul Harris. Today there are over 33,000 clubs worldwide with over 1.2 million members.  There are 56 standing committees and 560 members in Club 33 whose international motto is Service Above Self. The eradication of polio in the world has been an international focus. Apart from a few remaining areas in Africa this goal is well on it’s way to becoming a reality.
